Methodology & Sources
How we calculate your environmental footprint.
Core Formula
Our calculation engine uses a standardized approach based on the GHG Protocol.
Annual kg CO2e = (Monthly Activity Data) × (Emission Factor) × 12
To convert to tonnes, the result is divided by 1,000.
State-wise Grid Electricity (Scope 2)
Unlike global calculators, we use real state-wise grid emission factors from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) of India - CO2 Baseline Database (Version 18).
| State / Region | Emission Factor (kg CO2e / kWh) |
|---|---|
| National Average | 0.82 |
| Delhi | 0.97 |
| Tamil Nadu | 0.84 |
| Gujarat | 0.78 |
| Maharashtra | 0.72 |
| Karnataka | 0.62 |
* States heavily reliant on coal (like Delhi) have a higher factor than states with higher renewable penetration (like Karnataka).
Transport & Fuel (Scope 1 & 3)
Emission factors for direct fuel consumption and public transit are sourced from the India GHG Program and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
- Petrol: 2.31 kg CO2e / Litre
- LPG (Domestic): 2.98 kg CO2e / kg (approx. 42.3 kg per 14.2kg cylinder)
- Train Travel: 0.041 kg CO2e / Passenger-km
The Carbon Credit Score (0 - 850)
Your Carbon Credit Score is uniquely derived from the World Bank data for India's per-capita emissions.
- India Per Capita Average: 1.9 Tonnes CO2e / Year
- Score Formula:
Score = 850 - ((User_Tonnes / 1.9) * 425) - Meaning: Emitting exactly 1.9 tonnes yields a score of 425. Emitting 0 tonnes yields a perfect 850.
